I have used Golf/Jetta/Quantum tachs in Vanagon tach clusters with no problems. You need to make sure that the donor has the fuel and temp gauges in the lower face like the Vanagon tach. You don't need to pull the needle off but you do need to swap the back case of the tach for the Vanagon back case. The space between the tiny screws that holds the face dial to the case may vary a slight amount and if so I just flex the threaded face support towers a little until the 2 tiny face screws go in.
