I had a drive shaft like that on my Westy Syncro. I just replaced it. In other words, it can get unbalanced just like the original. I also found the one on my Westy to be heavier than the OEM replacement. However, you may find it difficult to get the OEM ones (my local dealer said they were on a nationwide backorder...though we found one at another VW dealer. )
