Subject:      Alloy spare into an 83?

Went to put the alloy spare into the 83 this evening and -- it doesn't want to fit without MAJOR work. Looks like it's just touching the coolant line on the passenger side, too (although not compressing it, it's snug). Is the later spare tire tray deeper than my 83? If so, how do I get them off?
