Subject: odometer gear part

Re: the raging discussion of odometer breakage a couple of weeks ago.

The same advice--to never reset the trip odometer except at rest--circulates in the Porsche circles.

This month's Porsche Panorama has an ad from Vertex in Miami for an "odometer repair gear" with a picture of a white double gear and the text: "Fix your Broken Odometer. Now you can finally replace the gear that is known for going bad on your 944 and 911. No longer will you have to spend $200 for a mediocre odometer rebuild, not to mention the 2-3 weeks that you are down. Order your easy to replace gear today! Only $25"

Since those Porsches use VDO speedos, I suspect this gear might fit the Vanagon odometer. Anyone want to find out and report?

http://www.vertexauto.com except I can't find this gear on the website, but this is the first month that their ad has the gear. I guess you have to call them at 1-866-668-0660.
