All I did was put the fuel additive in, it was something like Certain to Pass or Guaranteed to Pass, and ran the tank of gas down to almost empty refilled and went to the smog check station. I also changed the oil and filter put in fresh plugs and a new set of spark plug wires. I failed the test, I was bummed. The tech said to replace the Cat and get a new gas cap. So $150 later I went for the retest. Passed with ease the next time. The engine that is in the van is not the original and I recall, now, that when I first started it up something was screwed up and it was running so rich that flames were shooting out the tail pipe and the Cat was red hot. I'm sure I fried the Cat but forgot all about it once I got everything running correctly. To me the price of a new cat, $135 from Volkscafe Parts in Santa Cruz, was money well spent. One other thing, the timing is set at the one specified in the Bentley
