We buy the propane cartridges when we arrive.

You might consider a 5 gln tank, tree (two outlets and one for a lantern on top - all Coleman stuff). We run this kinda rig camping - with a couple of hoses you can have a 2 or 3 burner stove, a BBQ with cover and a lantern - all running off the same tank and one fill will probably get you from coast to coast.
