I have seen Vanagons with the metal lid that burned all the way to melting the steering wheel. Fool yourself into thinking you have done something by installing a metal lid but if you are serious about reducing the chance of loss by fire REPLACE all the fuel lines all the way to the tank and get rid of the plastic firewall fuel line coupler. Closely inspect the fuel lines regularly and tighten any adjustable fuel hose clamps.
