When I had the stock 1.6D in my 1982 Westfalia, I consistently got 27-29 MPG at 55-60 MPH with a 5 speed transmission in Southern California and Arizona. With the 4 speed transmission, it was more like 25-27 MPG at 50-55 MPH. Say what you want about the stock diesel top speed, but it is a fuel miser. On secondary roads it is plenty fast unless climbing hills or at higher altitudes.
