So when I changed out my heads I set my valves to .006" per Bob's instructions. Now about a month later I felt it was enough time to go ahead and final adjust them. I got it hot, popped the covers, set it for TDC #1 losened the locknuts, fingered the adjusters to contact, then screwed them in 1/3-1/2 a turn each. Tightened the locknuts, and repeated all around. Put the covers on and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Started it up and it ran REALLY rough (barely held idle). After a little while it got a bit better. Took it out for a spin, and now the engine is quiet as a ghost (a far cry from before adjustment). The idle seemed to be improving, but is still a bit rougher than before. Is this normal as the lifters self-adjust? Did I do them too tight? If so is it likely to be a serious problem? Everything has gone so smooth on this overhaul, I would hate to screw it up with a little final adjustment like this. BTW: Stupid me, I forgot to take a comp. check before adjustment. -Nate '84 Westrosity |
