Where did you run into a spot that called for 1.5 hours in second gear on 81? There are only a couple of spots in Virginia where 81 gets steep, but it's only for about a half mile or so. The main reason I would choose to avoid 81 would be the number of tractor-trailers on it. Whenever I come back to Virginia from Rochester, I take 15 down to Harrisburg, PA, then 81 down to where I pick up 64 in Staunton, VA. The hills I run into are on 15; the rough roads are in NY. Going down to the Keys, I'd take 95.
