The corners of my speedo were pretty thrashed. I found a metal--looks like galvinized metal--back for the speedo in a junk bus. I think it was a real early Vanagon, maybe a 1980. That's the only one I ever saw, so I guess they're hard to find. And I guess that makes this lousy advice. And since today is over it also untimely.

BUT, for those looking for a fix in the future, locating one of these metal speedo backing plates could make your life easier--in some small way. Just be careful nt to overtorque sonce all that plastic is pretty brittle including the screw receiving hole in the main part of the insturment cluster.

And, by the way, There's no question the metal piece is a genuine Vw part--it had all the appropriate holes and so on, Maybe even had sticker(?) I haven't been in there for some time. Wonder if VWOA still has any (LOL).

Anyway, maybe someone wiser knows when they stopped using the metal backing plate for the speedo. That was a sad day.

Best, Jeff 83.5 Westy LA,CA
