Use them (a dedicated pair of hose pliers) just once, and you will never go back. I haven't got a "blood blister" because of a slipping pair of vice-grips for years. Just make sure to get a decent pair when you buy them.

Of course if you are going to use a pair of "Vice-Grips", make sure they are genuine; many imitators, only one original. But even they slip on spring type hose clamps.
