List member Karl Mullendore has installed a 1.9TDI motor in his personal Westy using a purely mechanical pump from the earlier 1.9TD AAZ engine code. Most of the benefits of a TDI without all the electronics. Prior to the TDI, VW diesel engines needed only 1 wire to run down the road, the fuel shutoff/on valve control wire from the ignition switch. The TDI diesels use an ECU with 2 or 3 times the number of wires as a waterboxer fuel injection system and even more sensors to go along with all the wires. Using the AAZ engines injection pump on the TDI motor does away with all the complexity.

For a while Overland Parts sold TDI engine kits for Vanagons using the mechanical pump but they are no longer available.
