After that many years you may want to look at a "cleaner" wax that is
specifically designed to remove oxidation layers.

 Mequiers, kit, and others sell multistage systems of one bottle to clean
and the next for waxing.  On something the size of the vanagon a car buffer
might be a handy tool as well.  I bought one of those when I resealed my pop
top.
