I buy the voltage regulator/brush assembly for under $20, German made. I
consider it essential to carry a spare new one in any Vanagons that goes
on long trips. In my experience, ~90% of alternator charging failures
are solved by replacing this assembly. Disconnect the battery, take out
the 2 small screws, swap the brush/reg unit, put the 2 screws back in,
hook up the battery, good to go.
