Quick lifter question, just to make sure i understand them correctly - if you take off all the pre-load, the will return to their "longest" state on their own, right?

For example, if you purchase a mystery van, and don't know the history of it, can you back off all the adjuster screws all the way to get to a known starting point on the lifters, or will they stay partly compressed?
