Jim I always support the engine so it won't drop more than 2 or 3 inches and break-tweak-stretch the hoses and fuel lines while the tranny is out. If the input shaft is at all buggered at the end...the pilot bearing is toast...replace it... A cheap harbor freight type tranny jack would make a huge difference over a std type floor jack as far as stability. If you can get the clutch arm off (they rust on) you can pull the slave bracket off and not have to bleed or take the stupid hard to get off slave bolts off. All the years I have pulled VW apart this will be the first time I am going to try a transmission only pull. Any tricks or warnings?

Thanks
