From my experiences doing it a few time on my '88 4 speed, 3.2 if draining on level ground (through the normal hole... ;-) and up to 4.2 if you tip the nose up. Put in 3 and a bit, then check the level at the filler. You should be able to feel it with your finger at that point, and decide if more is needed, then add a bit at a time.
