Larry,

On my '84 the temp gauge needle is normally just below or barely touching the LED. On the '85 it is much lower ... just above the white cold mark ... "Indicating" much cooler than the '84.

The '85 used to run with the needle actually touching the cold mark ... then I put in a new thermostat which immediately brought it up to where it runs now (didn't move it much ... but some).

I've just accepted that what's normal for one isn't normal for the other and would only become concerned if either started operating outside of their "bands".
