One minor comment here about fire extinguishers: Don't keep it TOO close to where the fire is likely to be. Example...

My parent's diesel boat engine caught fire, and the fire extinguisher was IN the engine compartment. When we opened the engine compartment door to get the fire extinguisher, the added air circulation caused the fire to flare up. The fire went out by itself when we closed the door again, for lack of air.

Not that this would happen in our vanagons (a fire extinguishing itself), but for me, I would rather not need to get into the closet (above the fire) if my engine was on fire. Keep that fire extinguisher somewhere you are not going to get injured while reaching for it.

/Trina
