Charging R134a is a major pain. What I have found is that if you get a pan of hot water and sit the refrigerant can in it while you are attempting to charge the system it will make the charge go much faster. Having the compressor on, really doesn't seem to have much effect, and for newer vans (86-91) the compressor will not kick in until you have a decent amount of pressure in the system (they have a low pressure shut off switch). Even with the hot water you are looking at between 45 mins to an hour to charge four cans into the system. Ridiculous! I can charge Freeze-12 or R-12 into the system (same amount) in 10 mins.
