started pulling the transmission out late this morning. took my time and
still made some errors. if you have a subie mod make sure you pull the
right "nuts" not bolts. minor just cost me about 20 minutes. had to use
a fine pick tool to clean out the one cv joints bolts. i think that axel
may be orginal. lost another 20 minutes. tilted engine and transmisson
came out with a very snug pull. then had to slide the transmission off of
my transmission jack to get it out from underneath.
drained the fluid on it and it drained with a very pretty brass color.
very nice metallic flake coloring. definately going to do a post mortum
on that transmission.
then took the dremmel and modified a newer style starter that is going on
(grind down where the D bolt goes for a nut on stud).. my poor older
underpowered starter was starting to show its age.
cleaned up a lot of minor items underneath and moved the clutch slave and
bracker and transmission mount bracket and light switch. replaced a
corroded out contact that connected to the starter.
i then started the task of putting in the new transmission. then the
problems began. was very difficult getting the transmission up on the
jack under the van. got creative but still took about 45 minutes. spent
over two hours raising lowering adjusting all again and again. finally
realized that the very snug out was to snug to get it back in. in the
morning will suspend the engine to get that quarter inch i need to get the
transmission back in. i was debating doing that when i pulled it but
didnt. a simple 20 minute job would have saved me the time trying to get
it back in. but i got a lot of exercise out of it.
lessons learned.
1 raise the van about 8 more inches.
(this will allow me to get my transmission jack in and out with a
transmission on it.)
2 suspend the engine
(this will allow for room to reinstall and make the joining of the two
easier as well)
