That steam cleaning thing sounds great but VW Air Cooled present an entirely different problem. Since I've mostly been involved in buying and selling VW Westfalia (other than the one that I owned and drove for 10 years) I got lots of cleaning done on both the insides and outsides of Engines. I'm a firm believer in the toughness of the Type IV engines since I've seen the abuse and neglect that they can survive.

When I use to turn wrenches on hondas I worked at a shop where we would take the valve cover and pan off and use a kerosene steam cleaner and wash out the crankase when they were that gunked up. It seemed crazy to me but it worked. jeffe Atl. Ga. 1987' westy weekender
