Get a piece of paper, write down your (& your SO's) hobbies/interests. Buy the Lonely Planet (LP) USA (and any regional LP books (good USA-SW book)). Get a USA map and lay it on the floor. Read the LP book and, on the map, begin circling what you find 'interesting' your trip will plan itself.

USA travel hint #2: avoid all Interstate highways, take the smallest roads on the map, even Texas or Kansas can be interesting if one goes slowly and takes back roads, and takes an 'Americana' approach/appreciation to the mundane.

We're doing 'coast to coast' Canada this summer, Halifax to Vancouver and back. m2cw malcolm
