Speaking of 66, there are folks that attempt to re-create the passage of the
country exclusively using the remnants, as it were, of Route 66. As I
understand it, some parts of it are nearly unnavigable due to neglect and
other parts of it are just Interstates now, but the majority of it is still
there and drivable. It might be an interesting undertaking, or at least a
starting point.
You can see 'Historic Route 66' signs in all kinds of little towns in the

They call it 'The Mother Road', among other things. I dunno if you really
want to go to Chicago but I guess you could leave it in Tulsa for points
east and south.
I'm probably going to drive from SoCal to Nova Scotia someday. Might be
interesting to make that drive part of the trip.

And, someone else suggested staying off the Interstates, good suggestion as
you'll definitely run across more interesting things!  But, then again it
might take you a month to get across :-)  I seem to recall that the trek to
CA
in pre-Interstate days was not a quick or easy task....  At least that's
what
I'm told, being born in '66 I would have no real idea (about this or much
else
it seems :-)
