Subject: Re: Auto Tranny Final Drive, Oil Change?

Yes, and yes.Drop the pan and use the hex(17mm) opening. When you drop the pan, you will find a magnet in the indention. You can see this indentation in the oil pan from outside. Just clean it,and reinstall the pan w/gasket.U might consider just buying a pump to stick in the fill opening and draw out the old oil, as there are usally few fileings on the magnet. You might have to buy a complete service kit to get this gasket. The filter and second gear adjustment is straight forward. Use an inch pound torque wrench and tighten the adj. then back it off 2 turns(per Bentley). If you never changed the filter and fluid before, you will find out just how easy the fluid change is in a vanagon automatic. It can be done at every oil change with little effort by loosening the collar nut that holds the filler pipe to the transmission.
