I've not yet pulled the tranny from my own van yet though I have done it on Beetles many times. I did have a mechanic I relied on for engine and tranny work, but he has retired. When he would pull the tranny, he always put a 4X4 across the engine hatch space and wrapped a heavy chain around the front (transmission end) of the engine for support, and then pull the tranny. Always seemed to work with no problems. I don't know how much play up or down he allowed, but it seemed straight forward enough. My eventually have to put the principle into play.

Regards.
