Or if anything like the transmission I just pulled (third gone and four jumps out) I noted the following with it out.

1. the fluid had a very pretty brassy color to it. 2. the input shaft had way to much play (probably my strange noise in idle) 3. ALL shifts and turns of the axel did NOT show any really noticeable signs of trouble. All shifts seemed smooth and correct but that transmission did not have a third gear and fourth was on the way out. Even with third gear gone it turned on the bench when turned by hand. But if I grabbed the axle hard and then tried to turn the input shaft on third I felt a definite problem.
