Benny Boy
the three grove pulleys for the syncro and the 2wd vans are the same.
Syncro pulleys have the added syncro seal on the pulley makes it larger and
does not need to be replaced when rebuilding the engine. The syncro seal on
the pulley can be removed so as to use the stock seal that comes with the
gasket set. You can use the bug crank gear puller and a large socket for a
spacer. I add a little heat to the syncro seal on the pulley as you apply
pressure to the seal when you remove it.
The syncro seal is not easy to install into a case that is assembled and
should be done before the case is closed. If you do have to press a new
syncro seal into a closed case use the old seal from a syncro pulley to
press the syncro seal in but I find it easier to remove the syncro seal from
the pulley and then use the stock non syncro seal
Always clean the seal surface with a scotch bright pad and oil it before
installing the pulley
All USA imported vanagons have the 3 groove pulleys I have seen some
Canadian engines with single groove pulleys like a bug this must be what you
call early non AC vanagon pulleys
hope this helps
