Very few modern-fuel injected cars have filters before the pump. The main problem with a pre pump filter is that any restriction on the suction side of the pump will create a vacuum and cause the fuel to vaporize or even boil at the pump inlet. Particularly in warm weather this can create vapor lock problems, intermittent, unexplained fuel starvation etc. This is probably why VW discontinued the pre pump filter although vapor lock is rare on these vehicles. It is a major nightmare on some of the CIS cars. Let me guess - you have a '90-91 Vanagon, or at least one that lacks a fuel filter before the pump. Sometime in 1990, VW did away with the pre-pump fuel filter. Since that filter had a different sized inlet and outlet, this necessitated a different diameter fuel line from tank to pump - hence a different sized nipple on the tank. Since this tank is fairly rare, it is not generally available aftermarket. But there is an easy workaround. A simpler solution than brazing in a new fitting is to simply add the pre-pump filter (and fuel line), which also provides a little extra filtration protection for the pump (not a bad thing). - Ron Salmon The Bus Depot, Inc. www.busdepot.com (215) 234-VWVW _____________________________________________ Toll-Free for Orders by PART # : 1-866-BUS-DEPOT |
