Subject: catalytic converter failure question
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII

hi all,

I bought an 87 GL up in Washington last month and drove it back to Texas. While I was in WA, I had a VW shop do a full tuneup and fix lots of things on it. When I brought it in, it was idling high (around 1900) once warm. When the van got out of the shop, it was still idling high so I thought I would just deal with it once I was home since I wouldn't be idling much during the 40 hour drive home. I got home and found that the idle stabilizer on the oxygen sensor wasn't connected (don't ask me how the mechanic didn't catch this) so I reconnected it and the idle returned to normal. After 2 weeks of driving, my catalytic converter is now rattling and I'm replacing it this weekend. It looks pretty old but I'm wondering if it could be related to connecting the idle stabilizer or if it's just coincidence.

thanks! Alan
