Jonathan, Thank you for the link - interesting read, and it did explain quite a bit. I need to look at how the vacuum hoses are routed again to really understand how that applies to my van. When i installed the new engine in my van, i went with the larger later model throttle body with only one vacuum port. This meant that i had to change the vacuum hose layout to that of the '85 model as listed in the bentley. I can't help but wonder if this messes with the vacuum signal when compared to the earlier throttle body with 2 vacuum ports. I've never been 100% comfortable with this change. Also, is the side of vac canister closer to the distributor the advance or retard? The reason i am curious about all this is that i have noticed a bit of pinging in the engine under lower RPM higher load conditions, and am trying to figure out if the timing curves are all messed up from running a larger displacement engine with big valves and a different throttle body... I am beginning to think the engine is pulling a lot more vacuum (need to get a guage) which is advancing the timing too much and causing the ping.
