The stud is for a battery hold down plate but will work fine as the ground connection. The factory ground connection for the auxiliary battery mimics the chassis ground connection for the starter battery; its a threaded hole in the flat panel under the seat. This is the stock set-up for the aux battery in a non-GL Camper "Westy" model.
There isn't a close ignition-switched wire to the battery compartment under the drivers seat. I ran an amplifier control wire from my stereo to the area under the seat to turn on/off my amp and audio/video equipment with the head end unit. The wire runs on the inside of the drivers pedestal and across the floorboard in the valley where the bump-up is for the shifter then up behind the dash. This would be the easy way to get power from the aux battery to the radio and lighter socket.
I also routed a RCA cable and a CD Changer cable from the area under the seat to the headend unit, but those cables were routed underneath the body and in/out through the factory grommets. It probably would have been simpler to cut a channel in the cork-type insulation under the front carpeting for the wires.
Good luck,
Tim

Hi Folks,
I'm installing a optima yellow top battery into my 87. Just forword of the
battery box is a stud under the seat. Can I use that for my ground or do I
need to drill through the floor and ground it to the frame? Also how do I
connect my radio and cig lighter to the aux battery? The last one would be
anyone know of a easy source of switch 12v in that area?
Thanks
