What else besides the harness did you swap? The 84 and 87 have drastically different fuel injection and ignition components. The 84 system, is known as Digijet. It is basically a carry over from the air cooled engines with the addition of the O2 sensor. The ignition is a separate system and idle speed stabilization is done by advancing the ignition timing. The distributor uses both vacuum and mechanical advance systems. Idle warm up speed is done with an "auxiliary" air regulator, mounted the right head. It uses a heating element to close it quickly during cool weather.

The 87 uses a Digifant system. Ignition is now part of the ECU and ignition timing is electronically controlled. Distributor has no advance mechanism at all. Idle warm up speed and stabilizing is done with an electronic valve, controlled by a separate idle speed controller, mounted in front of the right tail light. This is the set up that buzzes.

So if you are using the 84 harness, you really need the 84 bits and pieces including the distributor. You need to either complete the 84 conversion or get the parts to keep the 87. The 87 isle stabilizer can be used with the 84 system but you will have to figure out the wiring. The idle stabilizer controller needs signals from the engine speed and temperature. It also needs signals form the AC and power steering.

Sorry about that...I keep forgetting that I have a "bastardized" wiring system from a 1984 harness, so maybe that is where the confusion is [long story, but in essence I bought my van for $600. after a engine fire toasted it and when we where putting it back together we couldn't find anything but a junked 84 in our area...I will get the proper harness one day when I get the funds ;-]

On pgs. 28.11 and 28.28 of Bentley it shows the idle stabilizer I'm referring to, and on 28.11 it shows it on the firewall as I have placed it, BUT I noticed that it is for a Air-cooled AFC system! My bad! Can anyone tell me if the configuration that it is supposed to have behind the firewall has the same part? Are the actual components the same? Just wondering... thanks, james in houston, tx. 1987 (or 1984?) Westy ;-)
