saturday i was perusing the local Pick and pull..and they had a '86 vanagon..just a GL 7 pass. nothing special. but something about the upper steering column cover caught my eye....

it was a heated seat steering column cover!! ive only ever seen one im ny life before, lister pedro dos santos from canada had this setup on his '91 GL, wich had heated drivers seat..

the upper steering column cover is bulged up more, and there is an embossed rectangular area in it for the heated seat switch.. it had a dummy blockoff plug in it.. i got home, and i tried the heated seat switch from a '93 cabriolet in it..and it pops right in!! so the cabriolet and the vanagon share the same heated seat switch..

has anyone ever wired up heated seats in their vanagon? i have the complete heated seat wiring harness and relays (except the seat heater elements) from a 93 cabriolet... anyone done it?

the part number for the heated seat upper steering column cover is: 251 953 515A

the regular one has the same part number without the "A" at the end.

the cabriolet/vanagon heated seat switch is: 161 963 563

so when you order a new upper steering column cover from the dealer, do they all come with the embossed area for the heated seat switch now? the one i had was datecoded '84...

chris
