My driveway is gravel and I do all my Vanagon maintenance there. Which has included dropping and reinstalling the transaxle. A piece of plywood to roll the jack on can be helpful and I always place the jackstands on squares of wood so they don't dig into the ground. Mike '84 GL 7 pass '85 GL Westy
