I think the late 70s 2.7L was a more popular conversion because it fit better under the lid. It only had about 160 HP, the same as a 2.5 subie motor. There is an early 80's Vanagon with a Porsche engine for sale right now in Bellingham WA. I think the price is only 3500. I did not get a good look as I was in a hurry.
