Another reason why the sight glass may not be very visible is dirt. The "sight glass" itself is simply a glass rod through the corner of the fridge wall. It is oriented towards a tempered glass window in the side of the combustion chamber. WIth ash on the inside, and dust and such on the outside, it is entirely possible that the glass window is dirty enough that you won't see any flames. Removal of the fridge will allow you to clean this window also.
