I'm trying to drive my 1984 liquid cooled vanagon westy with an automatic transmission from Berkeley (sea level) to the East Coast. I started getting problems as I got to higher altitudes, the van idles very rough and often stalls when I put it in park or reverse. Also it is very hard to start when cold. It would often start once in the morning but if I let it stall before the engine was very warm I could not get it to start again. It smells like gas when I try to start it, I would almost think it was flooded except that it is fuel injection. It seems to get worse the higher in altitude I go. After a week of stalling and driving finally on Thusday near Mesa Verde (7500 feet) I could not get it started at all. I got it towed to Durango and it still does not start here even though I checked all the obvious things like spark, fuel, battery and compression. All the VW shops are closed until monday. Has anyone encountered a problem like this? Suggestions? Thanks, Daniel
