Here's my secret: I've had duct tape over some tears for over a year. Okay, it doesn't look stunning, but it hasn't fallen off, either, no signs of it. Really easy, too! Doesn't leak in the rain. Easy to redo if it did fall off. But if you want to sew on canvas, I wouldn't worry about finding original Westy poptop canvas. Any fabric store will have a nice array of canvas, it's cheap, you can pick the weight and color you like, and it will work just fine. Old westy canvas might even be worse - it could be wearing out.
Joy (who does know how to work with fabric, even though she doesn't know how to fix vanagons)
