John ~~ The best way to tell the tale is to run a air test // Put each cylinder # on top dead center // you will need a threaded in air test adapter hose that can be picked up a most of your accredited parts stores // also a air compressor with regulated air // With cylinder # to be tested at tdc start air at appox. 30lbs. slowly increasing to about 60lbs you should then be able to hear where the air is going to // Bad or leaking exhaust valve air will come out the end of the muffler // Bad Intake valve - air will come out the intake system = remove air intake boot and hand open the throttle to test this area // Rings bad and piston and cylinder wear -- air will go into the crank case -take off oil fill cap and listen in this area . // also the mating area of the head and cylinder = head may not be tight // Ive seen many notches burned in this realm with compression loss // Listen carefully and you will find your problem // You can have problems in all the area,s so dont just assume when you hear air in one realm that you found your problem // Check all 4 above areas to be sure of all possible leaking areas per cylinder. This test can be used on 6 / and 8 cylinder engines also ( Place this test program in your favorites for future use
