I am (or was) too naïve - I had not tried Starbucks free wifi but heard about it and assumed it was a free service to entice customers.

I am familiar with the practice of signal surfing (aka warchalking, 'stealing' bandwidth, etc) - people cruise around and look for home networks with unencrypted wireless, park out front and surf.

Ethically, I'm no moralist or judge - I have mine encrypted. According to some sources, there is no crime involved in accessing a publicly available open network.

Give this link a boo. Do your own thing.

Eric,

It's still a "Fee Based" network, isn't it?

One word folks - STARBUCKS!

Starbucks has installed WIFI in each North American location, usually

the signal is good enough to enjoy from the parking lot.
