Route 6 through Pennsylvania is a fine way to travel, especially if you
have a bit more time, and it beats driving Interstate 80.

I suggest you take a diversion at Warren, Pennsylvania by taking PA Rt 59
east. 59 takes you through the Allegheny Nat'l Forest, and will take you
right past Kinzua Dam, and to some excellent natural attractions that you
would like to check out. Visit Jake's Rocks and Rimrock Recreation Area
just off Rt 59 east of the dam.

The nicest small town in northern Pennsylvania is Wellsboro. It is a
fairly old and well-established place that was one of the rich lumber
industry towns. There is the Pennsylvania Lumbering Museum nearby, too -
also just off Rt 6.

The PA State Parks began "experimenting" with allowing dogs in a few of
the parks a couple years ago. Only a few parks allowed them at that time -
I am not sure what the policy is regarding pets now. You can find out more

The Grand Canyon of PA is worth checking out. Watch out for rattlesnakes.
Leonard Harrison State Park is on the eastern rim of the gorge and does
have limited camping. Again, check out the web site regarding pets, though.

Scranton has Steamtown Museum - well run National Park museum, and they do
offer a lengthy steam train excursion, if you are interested in that type
of thing. Other than Steamtown, I do not recommend hanging around
Scranton. You will understand why when you get there. Northwest of
Scranton is Lackawanna State Park. Excellent campsites in a beautiful
setting.
