Not to worry.

Most likely the classic Vanagon "lifter syndrome". Usual fix is Mann or
Mahle oil filter ( they have stronger springs on the relief valve and
hold the oil in the engine galleries bertter when the engine is shut
down - aiding in preventing the lifters from leaking down), proper oil -
20W50Wt Dino Oil or 15W50 Synthetic ( I run  Mobil One 15W50), add the
occasional bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil sump  and be
religious about changing the oil. I do all the above on my 88 GL but if
I neglect the oil change even a little bit, the WBX doth protest, by
clattering it's valves  at me to get my attention. Works too!! But
otherwise, I virtually never have lifter clatter.
