Yeah, apparently the 1999-2002 2.5l had head gasket issues. I perused a Subaru forum topic and with the exception of a few minor details, they might as well have been talking about Vanagons and wasserboxers. Subaru was apparently very reluctant to admit they had a problem, and when they did admit it, they were resistant to doing any more than adding the Cooling System "Conditioner". The stuff apparently works really well, but it only can do so much. A significant number of people with leakers that couldn't be fixed with "conditioner" said it was like pulling teeth getting Subaru to change the bad gaskets. In one woman's case, they just kept "fixing" the leak with repeated applications of "conditioner" until the warranty ran out.
