As mentioned previously, folks coming out on Thursday and Friday are
welcome to stop in at my WV place, in Sugar Grove. I don't know if the
path to the camping area will have some new shale laid on (it hasn't
been as of this previous weekend), but that was reportedly in the
works. Let me know if you hope to be out on either of those days, so I
can keep an eye and ear open for you (especially if you are likely to
be coming in after dark.)
Directions to my WV place:
From Harrisonburg, Virginia, take US 33 West (be careful around the
courthouse where 33 does a zigzag.)
Continue on US 33 West into the George Washington National Forest.
After a long section of relatively straight road you'll start to go up
Shenandoah Mountain. The warning signs say 25mph. Believe the signs.
Cross over Shenandoah Mountain in to WV and on to Brandywine, WV. In
Brandywine, US 33 turns right. Turn LEFT onto Sugar Grove Road.
Follow Sugar Grove Road south about 10-11 miles to Sugar Grove. In
Sugar Grove the main valley Road turns left. Go STRAIGHT onto Moyers
Gap Road. You will also see a sign "To US220" pointing this direction.
Follow Moyers Gap Road up and over to Moyers. In Moyers you will see a
2nd "To US 220" sign pointing to the right. You may also see a sign
"Road Out" straight ahead. Go STRAIGHT onto Doe Hill Road.
Go 1/2 Mile down Doe Hill Road and turn LEFT onto Simmons Mountain Road.
Follow Simmons Mountain Road 1 3/4 miles to a driveway on the left
(sign says Ballyknock Lane). Turn LEFT on to Ballyknock lane (please
close the gate afterwards.)
It's about 1 3/4 mile to the house.
Saturday folks should plan to join up with us at "Cline's Hacking".
While there are several ways to get there, my recommended instructions
follow:
From Harrisonburg, Virginia take US 33 West to Whitmore Shop Road.
Turn RIGHT onto Whitmore Shop Road. Whitmore Shop Road will sort of
make a Tee junction. Whitmore Shop Road will continue to the right, and
Hopkin's Gap Road will go to the left.
Turn LEFT onto Hopkin's Gap Road. After climbing up and over a bit of a
hill
(i.e. Hopkin's Gap), Look for Long Run Road on the left.
Turn LEFT onto Long Run Road. This is a dirt/gravel road with some
rather rough sections. It goes into the George Washington National
Forest and will take you up (eventually) to Cline's Hacking. Cline's
Hacking is the intersection of Long Run Road with Second Mountain Trail
(on the left of a 4 way intersection).
Turn LEFT onto Second Mountain Trail (which may not be so labeled, but
there will be signs for ATV trails and it should be fairly obvious.
A short drive down (hundred yards or so) this will get you to the
rendezvous point where Dictum Ridge Trail turns off of Second Mountain
Trail.
Depending on weather conditions, Second Mountain trail had some really
interesting mud holes, while Dictum Ridge had some truely frightening
stair steps. Derek, Steve, Brady and I managed to get down the stair
steps, last year, after one of Herakles labors (I think the others did
more work than I). We may or may not go down those steps, but at least
we'll walk down and show them. :)
Later we'll go down US 33 and onto Switzer Lake Road (I don't believe
this is labeled except on maps). and eventually up to Meadow Knob for
camping on Saturday night.
