In my experience . . . a failing CV makes a cracking sound during hard, low
speed turns.  Check the CV for radial slop, backlash and running dry.  If the
sound you hear is a chirping, then it is likely a front wheel bearing.  A
failing front wheel bearing will chirp, or the chirping will disappear if it is
constant, whenever the bearing is loaded by the thrust forces of turning.  Again,
check the bearing for slop.

Of the two, I would prefer to have a CV failure; the parts for either repair
costs about the same (if you are going to break down the steering knuckle, you
might as well replace everything that moves which is attached to the
knuckle), but the CV work is mucho less difficult.
