Why not just repair the auto or install a good used one? The auto are very reliable and while they do wear out, they do not beak as easily as the 4-speeds. Any good tranny shop should be able to repair it if you can't where as the 4 speeds are somewhat specialized.

Found a 1989 Vanagon locally here, it runs well but the Auto tranny is shot. What is required to convert this to a 4spd? Does the year/model the manual tranny is from matter? And lastly has anyone done this, and how hard was it? I consider myself fairly mechanical but I've never converted anything automatic to anything manual. Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.
