Subject: Brake lining fell off brake shoe

Hi,

I had an unexpected problem yesterday a few days into my Vancouver island trip. The brake lining came off the brake shoe. It's not that the lining was worn thin (it's a good 5-6mm thick), but somehow it still came off the shoe. I noticed it as an odd sound when braking. I took off the drum and found the lining loose inside. Amazingly neither the drum, not the lining was damaged.m

Being on a trip and not exactly knowing my options for getting help I used some hing temperature epoxy glue and simply glued the lining back on. (Handy with the vacuum assist brakes to apply pressure during the cure time...). So far it seems to work (obviously being careful nursing the van)

Now I was curious what might other solutions to "in the sticks repair" might be? Maybe I should have just disabled the right rear brake for the drive to town? To do this what kind of plug/screw would fir the brake hose end?

Any other suggestions?

I was also curious how the brake lining is normally attached? Most others I've seen are riveted, but this one had no signs of rivets in the lining.

Also: Any suggestions for shops in Victoria,BC that could help me? (and would have things like Vanagon brake shoes in stock or quickly available). I'm staying in the U.Vic campus housing until I get this fixed.

Cheers, Martin (And '82 Westy 1.9TD)
