Heh. Not a moron at all. It's highly non-intuitive compared to most other vehicles. Sitting in the driver's seat, reach over the top of the instrument pod and feel the back edge. You'll find two "finger dents", one each on the left and right. Hook your fingers in there and lift up. The instrument cluster cover will lift off in the back. Unhook it on the front (carefully, it's thin plastic) and set it where you won't sit on it or walk over it. Inside, behind the cluster dead center in line with the steering column you'll find the cap to the brake fluid reservoir.

VW engineers were either crazy or ingenious...
